Home builder challenged to construct new home in one week for family in need
May 1, 2007 – Charleston-based home builder FirstCoast Homes is teaming up with Berkeley County Habitat for Humanity during the week of May 14 to build a new home for a local family in need as part of the Lowcountry 5 Habitat for Humanity Builders Blitz 2007.
As one of six home builders taking part in the Blitz, FirstCoast is constructing a home for Delmore and Melissa Reeves and their five children. Delmore, a plumber, and his wife, Melissa, who works at a fried chicken restaurant franchise in Moncks Corner, currently live with their children – two girls and three boys – in an overcrowded three-bedroom trailer that is in need of many repairs. The roof leaks, the floors are uneven, there is very little insulation, and duct tape holds together broken windows. The electrical wiring is so damaged, the family uses a kerosene heater, for fear that using electric heaters will start a fire.
Construction on the family’s brand new home will begin, and be completed, during the week of May 14 and will be located on Kylie Lane in the St. Stephen area.
“We are thrilled to be taking part in this year’s Builders Blitz,” says FirstCoast President Jeremy Graves. “We feel it’s important to step up as a community leader by not only building quality, affordable homes, but also providing housing for families in need in Berkeley County.”
FirstCoast has strong ties to Berkeley County and the Greater Charleston Area. With corporate offices in Charleston, the company is currently building homes and townhomes in the Berkeley County communities of Felder Creek, Stoney Creek and the Townhomes at Berkeley Commons. FirstCoast also has plans to begin building in Cane Bay Plantation and Spring Grove Plantation, also in Berkeley County.
About The Lowcountry 5 Habitat for Humanity Builders Blitz 2007
The Builders Blitz is a collaborative partnership of local home builders and the five Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the Charleston tri-county region (Berkeley County, Charleston, Dorchester County, East Cooper and Sea Island). The goal is to build six homes during the week of May 14, 2007. Home builders and their associations are being challenged to fully complete the building of these homes in one week, working with their subcontractors and suppliers to deliver the house
at a minimum cost to the affiliates. Prior to the blitz build, each affiliate secures land for the building and manages site development by providing lots with foundations, driveways and utilities in place. Affiliates also provide the builders with house plans and secure all required permits. Donations of supplies such as tile, lumber and cabinets are still needed. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible donation can email pford@charlestonhomebuilders.org or call 843-572-1414.
